Silence, along with an in-depth practice of pranayama, asana and meditation is a potent combination and not one to be taken lightly. It requires a lot of self discipline and devotion.

When we remove one of our senses, the others go into overdrive. When speech is removed, our mind speeds up and things start to rise to the surface. We start to hear everything more clearly, taste everything more deeply and our sense of smell is heightened.

You start to notice everything around you. Perhaps stopping to watch a row of ants moving along the path, seeing the bamboo dance in the warm breeze, clouds drifting by…

Self enquiry comes the forefront of our daily practice. We begin to observe the mind and its tendencies, and how the ego reacts to this new and possibly threatening situation. We notice our judgements towards ourselves and others and we become more sensitive to the energy that surrounds us.

As the silent days pass, humility, gratitude and love start to surface. Things start to soften and we begin to surrender a little bit more everyday. It’s a beautiful experience to say the least.

A dedicated daily practice is one of many tools to help maintain a steady, more balanced life. You begin to move through your days from the heart, not the head. This allows you to become more open to the natural flow of life and not barging you way through!
